Welcome to Burnaby South Secondary. I hope you have all had a wonderful, restful summer and were able to enjoy some time with family, friends and loved ones. We are excited to begin this new school year and want to share some information with you that will ease the transition to your new school.
Bell Schedule for 2026-2027

You will notice that first period classes (Monday to Friday) begin at 8:40am. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, Flex time occurs after Nutrition Break for 30min. Please pay close attention to the start times for each period. Being on time for each period is an important first step to maximizing success in each class.
Flex Time
Every Wednesday and Thursday (30min after Nutrition Break)
Flex Time is instructional time. Students have the opportunity to focus on an area of learning. It is a perfect opportunity to:
- Seek additional support from their teachers or counsellors
- Complete missed assignments and tests following absences
- Prepare for upcoming assessments
- Reduce evening homework
- Make progress on long-term assignments
- Gather with peers to plan and complete group projects
- Practice presentations
- Practice to improve skills in reading, writing, math, drawing, construction, sewing etc.
- Achieve success!
Please note: Flex Sessions for the month of September will be conducted in extended period 1/5 classes. Nutrition Break will follow at 10:25am – 10:35am
Reminder Regarding Restrictions for Cell Phones and Digital Devices
As per the requirement to all school districts in BC issued by the Ministry of Education and Childcare, restrictions to students’ use of digital devices, including cell phones, have been added to the Code of Conduct for the Burnaby School District. Please see the information below:
All students are expected to comply with appropriate use of personal digital devices and restrictions – which may vary by the student’s age and developmental stage – including:
- At elementary schools, personal digital devices will be safely stored, on silent mode, and out of sight during the school day, including non-instructional time such as recess and lunch.
- At secondary schools, personal digital devices will be safely stored, on silent mode, and out of sight during instructional time.
- At all grade levels, exceptions to restrictions apply when the classroom teacher gives permission to use personal digital devices for educational activities, and/or when students require personal digital devices for learning accessibility and/or medical purposes under school staff supervision.
- At all grade levels, expectations for conduct and use of technology as outlined in the District Technologies & Information Systems Student Acceptable Use Agreement also apply.
- Cell phone expectations during instructional time extend to hallways as well:

a) Assembly in the Michael J. Fox Theatre at 10:30am. b) Your Period 1 Teacher will meet you and take you to class for an orientation. c) During this orientation, you will be given your timetable and other information that you may need about school procedures. A Leadership Student will take your class on a school tour. d) On Tuesday you will be dismissed at approximately 12:00 p.m. |

| Supplies | Please bring a pen, notebook for the opening day. Each teacher will inform their students about supplies requirements for their specific course. |

Parents/Guardians who choose to accompany their students to school are asked to remain outside to allow room for our students in the main foyer and hallways. You may meet your students in the parking lot at 12:00 pm.
