On Wednesday, May 27th during an extended period 1, students will be engaging in important learning and reflection connected to British Columbia’s Core Competencies.
What Are the Core Competencies?
The Core Competencies are the essential skills and abilities that help students learn, grow, and succeed—both in school and in life. They include:
- Communication
- Thinking
- Personal & Social
These competencies, along with students’ literacy and numeracy foundations, are central to B.C.’s K–12 curriculum and support students in becoming confident, capable, and caring citizens.
Why Are Students Reflecting on Them?
The Ministry of Education requires all B.C. students to complete Core Competency self‑assessments throughout the school year.
This process helps students:
- Understand where they are at in their learning
- Set goals for growth
- Plan specific steps they can take to improve
- Take ownership of their own learning journey
What Will Happen on May 27th?
Students will spend time:
- Reviewing the Core Competencies and goals they set in Term 2
- Completing a self‑assessment using the Core Competency profiles
- Reflecting on their strengths and areas for growth
Communication With Families
A copy of each student’s self‑assessment response will be automatically sent to the primary parent/guardian email address on file. This allows families to see their child’s reflections and support their continued growth at home.
Why This Matters
Core Competency development begins long before school and continues throughout life. Reflection days like May 27th help students recognize their progress, understand themselves as learners, and build the lifelong skills they carry into future learning, relationships, and work.
